Deciding whether to go to a funeral

Should I attend a funeral?

If you are trying to decide whether or not to go to a funeral then the answer is probably yes - go if you can. You do not need to be invited; a funeral service is open to anyone, unless the family ask specifically that it is a private ceremony. Those arranging the funeral will appreciate you being there.

Taking children

This is entirely a personal decision and it is perfectly acceptable to take children to a funeral, but toddlers and babies can be bored and/or disruptive, especially if it’s a long service. If they start to make a lot of noise, parents generally take them outside during the ceremony itself.

With older children you could ask them if they want to go and if they do then it’s a good idea to explain it fully beforehand so they know what to expect.
