Cemeteries, or graveyards as they are often referred to, are pieces of ground set aside for burials. There are around 14,000 cemeteries in the UK. Many cemeteries are closed for new burial plots, although they may be open for the interring (burying) of ashes. Many cemeteries are attached to churches and there are some are operated privately and many are run by Local Authorities.
Open cemeteries are listed on funeralmap and local funeral directors will also be aware of the local cemeteries in their area. If you are arranging a funeral, the Funeral director usually makes the arrangements with the owners or managers of the cemetery to dig the grave and will complete all necessary paperwork with you.
