Police said the windows of mechanical diggers were smashed at the cemetery on Lone Moor Road sometime between Sunday afternoon and Monday morning.
Sinn Fein Councillor Patricia Logue said vandals had gone on a "wrecking spree" on "consecrated ground".She said there was "no excuse for this wanton act of vandalism".
The councillor said the machinery was being used to construct a new section of the City Cemetery. She claimed those responsible for attacking the vehicles also damaged some of the construction work. The project is due to be completed within months.
