Cemetery plans are submitted – at last, says newspaper.

Lutterworth looks set to get a new cemetery after plans to site one alongside a 130-home estate were submitted by council bosses, reports the Harborough Mail.

Leicestershire County Council has submitted the scheme for the new facility at Leaders Farm off Coventry Road to Harborough District Council. The plans were supposed to be submitted earlier this year, but were complicated when an additional environmental survey had to be carried out because of the discovery of bats, a protected species, at the site.

Lutterworth man James Knight, whose home in Cunningham Drive backs on to the proposed estate, had raised concerns when the scheme was first aired last year that his
and other homes in Cunningham Drive would be overlooked by the new estate. He also said the cemetery was in the wrong place in the new development, and would have become a more ‘meaningful’ open space had it been put at the eastern side of Leaders Farm, rather than on the western side next to Coventry Road.

However, speaking to the Mail this week, Mr Knight admitted that some of his concerns had been taken into account in the latest plan.He said: “They have made it so the proposed houses are side-on with ours in Cunningham Drive, rather than facing us, which will prevent some of the overlooking issues, and they have also moved them slightly further away.

“I still believe they’re missing an opportunity by having the cemetery at the western side of Leaders Farm though.”

Speaking earlier this year, Lutterworth county councillor Rosita Page said a lot of hard work had been put in by the county and town councils to ensure the plans had been put together.

Leaders Farm had been earmarked for industrial use in earlier local plans.
